High School Graduates

source:  Mansfield Herald:  21 October 1886

Prof. Simpson is distributing the high school manual for 1886.  The part relating to the (Mansfield) high school graduates is interesting.

The whole number graduated since 1862 is 275.  Of the number only 74 were males.  The largest classes were in 1883 and 1886 when the number was 21.  In 1863 there was no graduating class, and in 1868 the number was only two.  In 1862 and 1868 there were no boys in the class.

Death has called but 13 of the 275.  The class of '69 has the largest number, viz.:  4.  The deceased are Oscar W. Billings, '64, Clara Smith and Mrs.  Gray nee Lottie Burr, '67;  Olive S. Anderson, drowned in Sacramento River;  Mrs. Lasly nee Eliza Dougherty, Horace Booth, Cyrus Painter, '69;  Mrs. Todd nee Eliza Peritte, '72;  Mrs. Dr. King nee Carrie Smith drowned in Lake Chautauqua, '73;  John Carpenter, '75;  Edgar Pleasants, '79;  Maggie Niman, '81;  Frank M. Au, '82;  Ozella Harrington, '84.

The majority of the graduates were satisfied to remain at Mansfield and 181 are living here.  Those who roamed away took Horace Greely's advice and went west, with the exception of four who went east and one south.

Of the girls 67 are married, 46 teachers, and 9 in other avocations, such as clerks, stenographers, &c.

Of the boys, as far as the record shows, 9 became attorneys, 4 physicians, 5 clerks, 2 traveling salesmen, 1 banker, 2 dentists, 2 merchants, 2 bookkeepers, 3 journalists, 3 druggists, 1 farmer, 1 city clerk, and 1 a member of the U.S.N., 1 insurance agent, 2 with the A.T. co.
